Patriotic Quilts
Tour the US to Benefit Troops
The
Oklahoma
Women’s Veterans Organization proudly hosts the God Bless
America quilt exhibit June 19th, 1:00-4:00 pm at
the VA Medical Center, in the Health Wing Gym, 921 N.E. 13th,
Oklahoma City. Open to the public, this free exhibit,
containing eighty-five patriotic quilts, captures the
essence of America the Beautiful, pays tribute to our unsung
heroes and troops and depicts “liberty and justice for all”
by inspiring flag-waving loyalty to our “one nation under
God.”
One of the quilts featured is a miniature of the
Independence Quilt by Kaye Hansen
that Comforts Soldiers in Iraq. Kaye’s brother Don
volunteered to train police officers in Iraqi. Compelled to
create a quilt for Don, Kaye overcame this ex-marine’s
protests by suggesting he give it to other soldiers when he
came home. Don presented the quilt to Gunny Sizemore,
Supervisor of Camp Striker Stables in Bagdad, Iraq, which
offers a home away from home for U.S forces.
Kaye’s “comforter” adorns
a couch to cheer our troops far from home. Every American
soldier passing through wraps up in Kaye’s quilted stars and
stripes to reassure them of our gratitude for their service
in the name of
Independence.
Kaye’s quilt also
tells about the Home of the Brave quilts she makes for the
families of fallen troops that replicate the Civil War
bedroll quilts given to wounded soldiers by the Red Cross.
Children and adults are
invited to enter their 22x22” patriotic quilts by December
31, 2008 for touring the US for three years. All profits
from the $100 exhibit rentals go to provide quilts for
wounded troops and the families of the fallen (free for VA

RE:
Memorial Quilt Comforts Parents of
Fallen Hero
The mournful sound of taps echoed
in the memorial service as troops marched past the
helmet-adorned rifle, dog tags swaying silently in remembrance,
to say farewell to SPC Douglas Desjardins. Killed November 5,
2006, when a bomb detonated near his MlAl tank in Iraq, Doug was
described as a steadfast, laid-back comedian with a trademark
smile.
As Americans celebrate Memorial
Day with picnics and barbeque, The Home of The Brave volunteers
in chapters across the country are sewing commemorative quilts
for families of U.S. soldiers killed in action. Kaye Vicars
Hansen, State Coordinator for the Oregon HOTB Quilt Project,
recently presented a quilt to Doug’s parents signed by Governor
Ted Kulongoski and seven Mark Twain Middle School students who
helped make the quilt.
Kaye’s chapter recently received a
$1000 donation from advance profits from Buckboard Quilts’ God
Bless America Quilt Exhibit that is touring the U.S. for three
years to benefit troops and help heal our torn nation. Kaye’s
22” quilt entry for the exhibit is a miniature of the 48”x84”
memorial quilts created by HOTB volunteers for the families of
fallen soldiers. Started in 2004 by Don Beld of Redland,
California, HOTB quilts replicate the Civil War-era bedroll
quilts give to wounded soldiers by the U.S. Sanitary Commission,
now the Red Cross.
Children and adults are invited to
enter their 22x22” patriotic quilts that capture the essence of
America the Beautiful by paying tribute to our unsung heroes,
depicting “liberty and justice for all” and flag-waving loyalty
to our “one nation under God.” Deadline is December 31, but mail
your quilt to 12101 N. MacArthur, #137, Oklahoma City, OK 73162
by June 30 if you’d like your quilt and story published in the
book by author Judy Howard.
All profits from the $100/week-end
quilt exhibit rental and books go to provide quilts for wounded
and fallen soldiers. See quilt photos, entry and rental forms on
www.HeavenlyPatchwork.com. Email
BuckboardQuilts@cox.net
to reserve the Patriotic Quilt Exhibit. See
www.oregonhomeofthebrave.org for more about Kaye’s volunteer
opportunities.

RE: Armed Forces Day Celebration
Modern Day Betsy Ross's Help
Heal Wounded Soldiers
As the nation celebrates Armed Forces Day May 17, volunteers
are busy creating quilts for wounded soldiers.
Quilts of Valor has awarded 16,000 quilts to soldiers at the
Walter Reed and 70 other Hospitals. Marine Comfort Quilts
made 4078 for the families of fallen soldiers with special
hand-stitched messages of hope. Home of The Brave Quilts has
given 2039 commemorative quilts. Operation Kid Comfort
transfers Daddy’s photo onto a quilt or pillow for deployed
servicemen’s children.
KIA Memorial Quilts, Quilts for Injured Soldiers, Tribute to
the Troops, churches, quilting bees, schoolchildren, Amish
and Mennonites stitch with love and gratitude these comfort
quilts.
All profits from the God Bless America Quilt Exhibits and
publication go to these groups that provide quilts for
wounded and fallen soldiers. Judy Howard is challenging all
Betsy Ross's to express their patriotism by creating 22”
quilts for the exhibits that are touring the U.S. for three
years to benefit wounded soldiers. “With your help, we can
blanket America with love of God and Country to help mend
our torn nation and encourage our troops,” Judy said.
These 22” quilts pay tribute to our American Heroes and
Troops, depicting “Liberty and Justice for All” and
expressing flag-waving loyalty to our “One Nation Under
God.” The traveling exhibit is returning from Chattanooga,
TN and Salt Lake City to make its first stop in Oklahoma
before its Millsboro, VA showing.
It’s not too late to enter. Open to children and adults, the
deadline is December 31, 2008. But if you’d like to see your
quilt and story published, please mail it by June 30 to
12101 N. MacArthur, #137, Oklahoma City, OK 73162. Rent
these patriotic quilts for $100/week-end for your next quilt
show or patriotic event today by emailing

“Like a mother's loving
arms, this quilt is our hug for our hero—a gift of thanks
for protecting America. It expresses our gratitude, love,
respect, and honor to forever hold and comfort you."
This is the greeting sewn on the back of the quilt that
Staff Sergeant Logan Ballew received upon arriving at the
Bethesda Military Hospital in August of 2006.
Disarming a roadside bomb in Iraq, Logan received the
impact of the bomb when it exploded. The local military
hospital personnel feared Logan might die. They waited three
days to notify Logan’s parents, not knowing whether they
would be sending him back home in a body bag or to a
hospital.
Logan arrived two days later in Bethesda where a quilt
made by a Quilts of Valor volunteer welcomed him. Arnold and
Joan Ballew flew from Edmond, Oklahoma to Bethesda to keep
bedside vigil.
Marine Mom Joan had made many quilts through Quilts for
Injured Soldiers. “We created these quilts as ‘Hugs for Our
Heroes’ to give them hope and peace for their road ahead.
A
little piece of me goes out with
each quilt I make,” Joan explained. Joan’s reward for
her many hours of volunteer work comes from the Thank You
received from wounded soldiers like this one: “When I get
scared with the memories of war, I curl up in my quilt and
the nightmares go away. It makes me proud to be a soldier,
knowing Americans really care.
There’s so much love and a prayer in every
stitch.”
One of the first questions Joan asked Logan was if he
had received a quilt. When Joan asked what he thought of the
gift, Logan expressed how humbled, honored, and encouraged
he felt to receive such a treasure. “ It
was a source of strength and
comfort that lifted my spirits and warmed my heart. I
knew my service was appreciated and not in vain.”
Joan related, “I excitedly unfolded the bright quilt
and caressed the stitches of comfort some volunteer quilter
had lovingly taken.”
When Joan emailed the quilt guild to thank them, she
instantly bonded with the woman who made Logan’s quilt. “She
became my new buddy when I most needed a friend to share my
feelings of loneliness and fear while sitting at my son’s
bedside.”
After fourteen months of painful physical therapy,
progressing from wheel chair to walker to cane, Logan now
walks with a slight limp with the help of a concealed leg
brace. Permanent nerve damage in his leg shattered Logan’s
career dreams of serving his country in the Marines.
However, he is now adjusting well to civilian life with his
part-time job in cabinetry in Norman, Oklahoma.
Joan’s 22” portrait quilt of her marine son using the
zipper, fabric and buttons from his uniform won a blue
ribbon in Buckboard Quilts' God Bless America Quilt Exhibit
which is touring the U.S. for three years with profits going
to provide more of these healing quilts for soldiers.
